Testosterone Deficiency

Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (or TDS) is a clinical spectrum of conditions caused either by a lack of production of the hormone testosterone or by reduction in effects on tissues of the body caused by other co-morbid health conditions. Most commonly, we see this association with the diabetes mellitus or obesity – known as the Metabolic Syndrome

The hormone Testosterone is not only linked with effects on male sexual function, but acts on many other organs and tissues of the body thereby its deficiency can have a wide range of effects


Symptoms of low Testosterone (Include)

  • Erectile Dysfunction
  • Low Sexual Drive
  • Weight Gain (Waist Circumference)
  • Depression/poor concentation
  • Hair /muscle loss
  • Lack of energy
  • Increased sweating (Flushing)
  • Fragile Bones/fractures


How Common is TDS

It Is thought that around one in every 200men in the general population will have TDS. However TDS is sometimes undetected, as the symptoms are discrete and usually put down to ageing.

  • Chemotherapy
  • Liver Cirrhosis
  • Kidney Failure
  • Genetic Abnormalities i

How is TDS treated?

Usually, once assessed and diagnosed treatment can be initiated easily by application of topical gel, Injection, tablet or implant


Investigation involves

  • Testosterone Blood Test (taken in the morning before 11am, on two separate occasions)
  • Physical Examination
  • Medical History
  • Prostate Assessment


Treatment options For TDS

  • Intra muscular Injection (Either once per month  or one every three months)
  • Testosterone Gel (applied daily to the skin)
  • Tablet (tablet placed on the gum to be absorbed; used twice daily – testosterone has no effect if swallowed !)
